Activities

Use these activities to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Create Your Own Butterfly Effect”

1. Write a one-page anecdote where a single detail changes the outcome, resulting in two different possible endings. For example, your hero leaves the house without tying his shoelaces, trips, and falls—right into the love of his life! Alternatively, your hero takes the time to tie his shoelaces before he leaves the house—and misses his bus to school as a result. Pinpoint the “butterfly” moment in your story.

“Visualize the Stages of Grief”

2. Use a tool like Pinterest or old-fashioned collage materials (magazine, scissors, glue/tape) to create a visual representation of one of the stages of grief. Explain why you chose the imagery in question.

Teaching Suggestion: Give students the option to share their work with the class, or to simply write a brief paragraph explaining their work. Some students may prefer not to perform in front of others.
