Key Figures

Aziz Ansari

Ansari, born on February 23, 1983, got his start as a stand-up comedian, which eventually paved the way for a successful acting, directing, and writing career. His most widely known comedic role was playing Tom Haverford in Parks and Recreation. Due to his success as a comedian and public figure, he had been approached many times by publishers who were hoping that he would write a book. It was only after having a personal dating crisis and realizing that his experience was common among modern singles that he decided to write this book. His experience as a comedian is the driving force behind Modern Romance. While the book relies on personal interviews, data, and expert research, Ansari’s comedic approach to the material is relatable to modern singles.

Eric Klinenberg

Klinenberg, born on November 14, 1970, is a public sociologist who specializes in culture and media. He grew up in Chicago but received his PhD from the University of California. He currently works as a Professor of Sociology at New York University and edits the journal Public Culture. He is a prolific author and journalist and has won multiple writing awards. His solid career history and expertise as a researcher of the effects of cultural and media trends on society provided a scientific foundation for Ansari’s comedic commentaries.
