Chapter 41 Summary

Adam tries to explain to Juliette how to drive a car and teases her that she’s lucky it’s not a manual transmission. She manages to drive to the abandoned building where they left Kenji and James. Juliette is very relieved when she sees that they are both okay. James is already asleep, so they put him in the car. Juliette tells Kenji to get into the driver’s seat. Adam is in excruciating pain from his wounds, “his bare body is finally cracking under the cold weather, the hours of torture, the strain of holding himself together for so long” (281).

They are surprised that all the soldiers are gone and suspect that something is wrong. Kenji assumes that his tracker is not working because this is the only explanation for why no one is looking for him. Because of his wounds, it is getting harder and harder for Adam to stay conscious. Juliette tries to console him by saying that once he gets better “[she’s] going to memorize every inch of [his] body with [her] lips” (285). Adam’s eyes light up, and he asks her to stay close to him because “[her] touch is the only thing keeping [him] from losing [his] mind” (285).
