Chapter 5 Summary

Alone in the hotel lobby, Paisley waits for Will. She is unnerved by the quiet and isolation and thinks about the storm that is predicted to hit the island tomorrow night, cutting them off from the mainland until Monday. While she waits, she peeks into the staff corridor and sees someone in a long robe—Malcolm—walking by. She realizes that she will be in trouble if she’s caught sneaking out and hides, resolving to wait for Will.

After 10 minutes, she decides that Will must have fallen asleep in his room and won’t be coming. She starts to return to her room but then changes her mind, realizing that she never rebels or breaks the rules. She decides to sneak into the park alone and explore, not wanting to miss the chance of seeing it late at night.

While exploring the park, Paisley becomes frightened but reassures herself that she’s being silly. However, she hears a scraping noise behind her and thinks she sees a figure out of the corner of her eye. She heads back to the hotel but chastises herself for being ridiculous. On her way to bed, she texts Will and tells him he missed all the fun.
